A call with nothing but sound

Random voice chat on Whisperly is a call with one stranger, chosen at random, where the only thing that travels between you is sound. You pick Audio on the match screen, your microphone switches on, and the other person hears you while seeing nothing at all. No face, no room, no phone number on either side.

It all happens in a browser tab, on a phone or a laptop, with nothing to install. Older voice chatting websites wanted a download and a headset; a security guard on a 3am break can start a random audio call from the phone in his pocket. And it’s strictly one to one: the person on the line is the only person on the line.

The low-voice list

Can you voice chat quietly while everyone else sleeps?

Yes, and it’s one of the main reasons to choose voice over video. The trick is getting the microphone close and keeping your voice down, rather than whispering into a laptop across the room. Five habits cover almost every house with someone asleep in it.

  • Bring the phone up, bring the volume down. Hold it about a hand’s width from your mouth and speak at the level you’d use beside a sleeping baby. The microphone picks you up; the next room doesn’t.
  • Use a wired headset if you have one. A small mic near your chin catches a low voice far better than the one built into a laptop lid, and the other person’s voice stays in your ears instead of the room.
  • Tell them early. Something like “keeping my voice down, my flatmate’s asleep” saves you from a stranger who keeps asking you to speak up.
  • Pick the softest room. Curtains, a bed and a closed door swallow sound; a tiled kitchen bounces it down the hall.
  • When even a whisper is too much, switch modes. End the call and start your next match on Text. It’s the same idea, one stranger and no camera, without a sound leaving the room.

What does a stranger get from your voice alone?

Your tone, your accent, a sense of your mood and whatever noise is in the background. They don’t get your face, your room, your clothes or your number. That’s why anonymous voice chat feels easier for a lot of people than a camera: you’re present without being on display.

Voice still gives away more than people expect, though. A train announcement, a dog that barks in a recognisable way or a neighbour shouting a name can say where you are. The page on how to talk anonymously goes through those leaks; on a call, the short version is to check what’s audible behind you before you press Start.

Audio, text or video: what does each one ask of you?

The match screen has three modes, and each wants something different from your phone or laptop. When you only want a voice, there’s no reason to hand over more than a microphone.

The three match modes compared
ModePermission it needsWhat the other person getsWhen it suits
AudioMicrophone onlyYour voice and the sound around youLying in the dark, walking home, doing the dishes
TextNothing at allThe words you typeA silent house, an office, a voice that needs a rest
VideoCamera and microphoneYour face, your voice and your roomOnly when you’ve decided you want to be seen

If a silent conversation suits tonight better, the random text chat page covers that mode. Video only starts when you pick it yourself.

Three taps to a voice

Open the match screen, tap Audio in the row of modes at the bottom, then press Start. The browser asks for your microphone the first time, the camera stays out of it, and a stranger is connected.

  1. Switch to Audio

The match screen opens on Video. Tap Audio in the row at the bottom before you start.

  2. Allow the microphone

Your browser asks once. The camera isn’t part of an audio match, so it never gets asked for.

  3. Say something first

A stranger joins. Give them your first name and the time where you are, then let them talk.

Your first audio call with strangers will probably feel odd for about ten seconds. Say who you are before asking anything, because a voice that just says “hello?” gives the other person nothing to grab. Then give the line a second after you speak: there’s a tiny delay on most connections, and talking over it makes both of you stop at once.

Voice is where the conversation lives here

Plenty of places treat audio as a waiting room, somewhere you sit until you feel ready to switch the camera on. Whisperly doesn’t. A random audio chat is meant to be the whole thing. Two strangers calling each other at random sounds odd on paper; in practice it feels like chatting to someone at a bus stop at night.

It changes how people talk. Without a face to manage, nobody checks their hair mid-sentence or watches themselves in a corner of the screen. You hear someone pause before answering, hear them laugh at their own story, hear the kettle click off in their kitchen. A stranger voice chat at one in the morning often goes somewhere a video call wouldn’t, because neither of you is performing.

It also suits people who live in shared flats, who have kids asleep next door, or who just don’t like how they look on a front camera. They aren’t waiting for video. They wanted a voice, and the chance to talk properly without first checking what the room behind them looks like.

Inside the call

What happens inside a voice match?

You talk, and a Next button moves you on whenever the conversation runs out. The call also shows a notice before billing would begin, which the free-to-start page linked below explains.

Who you hear is down to chance and the clock. The UK, Germany, Canada and France are among the bigger groups on Whisperly after the US, so when it’s late where you are, the voice on the line may be someone whose morning has just begun. Guessing where they’re from is a fair opening, and the time difference usually hands you the second question.

The is Whisperly free page explains the free matches and rewards that come before any of this, and the what to say to a stranger guide has openers that work without a face.

When the call ends

If a voice talk with strangers went well, follow the person before you hang up. Their profile then stays within reach, and you can send a message whenever you like. Be clear-eyed about one thing: a profile has a Message button and a Video call button, but no voice button, so another audio call with the same person isn’t something you can dial.

A good voice conversation usually carries on in writing. People swap a few messages the next evening and pick up where they stopped. If both of you later decide you want to see each other, the video call button is there, and it only rings when one of you taps it.

Voice chat with strangers: quick answers

Is there a random voice chat with no camera?

Yes. Choose Audio on the match screen and the call uses your microphone only. The other person hears you and never sees you.

How do I voice chat with strangers online?

Open Whisperly in your browser, go to the match screen, tap Audio and press Start. Allow the microphone when asked and a stranger joins the call.

How is a random voice call different from a regular call?

A regular call needs a number and reaches someone you chose. A random voice call reaches a stranger, and neither of you sees a number.

Is anonymous voice chat really anonymous?

Nobody sees your face or a phone number, and you don’t need to give a name. Your voice and the sounds around you still reach the other person, so watch what you say.

Can I do a voice call with strangers on my phone?

Yes. It works in your phone’s browser with nothing to install. Hold the phone close and you can keep your voice low.

Is audio chat with strangers one on one?

Always. Every audio match is you and one other person; no third person joins the call.

How will I know when a call starts costing coins?

A notice appears in the call first. If you stay, the call continues and uses coins by its length.

Do I need to install anything for voice chat online?

No. A modern browser on a phone or computer is enough. You can add Whisperly to your home screen if you want an icon.

Can I call the same stranger again by voice?

Not directly. Profiles have Message and Video call buttons but no voice button, so follow the person and keep talking by message.

Is free voice chat really free?

Free to start: new users get free matches and rewards add more. A call shows a notice before any billing begins.
